How Jungle Sauce Got Its Name

In a lot of East African families, it's common for parents to be known not by their own first name, but by their eldest child's — "Mama [Name]," "Baba [Name]." It's a small tradition, but it says something bigger: family comes first, and it shapes how you're known to everyone around you.

When our daughter Amaya was born, that's exactly what happened. Janet started being called Mama Amaya by family — and somewhere in the years of cooking together that followed, it became obvious that the name belonged on the label too, whenever there was a label to put it on.

Jungle Sauce came first, out of a recipe that had been tweaked at family dinners for years before we ever thought about bottling it. The name is a nod to where those flavours come from — not a marketing decision, just an honest description of where this sauce has always lived.
